Young Adult Service Communities (YASC), is a program of our denomination, the United Church of Christ. Congregations participate in YASC by hosting a community of young adult interns (ages 21-35). These interns live in intentional community with other young adults who share a common commitment to mission and justice work, congregational service, spiritual growth, and personal discernment.
First Church, Simsbury, is excited to join the YASC network of churches to host three young adults for the 2017- 2018 program year!
From September through August each year, three young adult interns live at the church house at the upper end of the church parking lot. Each intern is placed with a local nonprofit agency dedicated to mission work, justice advocacy, and collaborative action.
Interns will also be part of the First Church community, attending and participating in worship and or assisting with church school, and choosing two or three areas of focus in which to provide leadership within the life of the church. Interns also work with the CT Conference of the United Church of Christ, attending workshops, conferences, and taking on a social justice project. Finally, young adult interns spend time in reflection and discernment with a spiritual sojourner, exploring God’s call on their lives.
Introducing Our 2017 – 2018 Interns:
My name is Anastasia Damyan, I’m joining the YASC program from Minneapolis, Minnesota. I’m deeply excited for this time where I will be interning with Christian Activities Council and First Church of Christ, Simsbury. I look forward to being a part of your community and worshiping with you. I’m especially excited to participate in your music ministry and youth ministry. I was born in Singerei Noi, Moldova and raised in Minnesota. I’m interested in cultural studies, psychology, and helping people. My hobbies include dancing, singing, gymnastics and yoga. I’m looking forward to the beautiful seasons of Connecticut and growing together as a community!
Meet Bekah Anderson….I am a recent graduate of Hampshire College, where I studied religion and creative writing. I’m a PK (pastor’s kid) with a deep commitment to the present and future of the church, and I’ve been dreaming of doing a service year since I was fifteen. I’m really excited about getting to know the community in Simsbury and working with Our Piece of the Pie. My passions include disability justice, progressive theology, and fantasy novels. I would love to talk about any of these, and more, over a nice cup of tea.
Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Quinn Donnelly, and I am beyond excited to embark on this journey with you all. Some of my favorite things are reading, writing, earl grey tea, arts & crafts, sunflowers, the smell of rain, singing/playing guitar, hummus, and making new friends. I am grateful to the First Church of Christ, Simsbury for finding it in their hearts to offer me a place in their community. I’ll be working in the Life Enrichment Program at McLean. This upcoming year I hope to learn more about myself and my faith. I look forward to getting to know each of you and worship alongside you all. I just know that this is going to be a fantastic year and thank you all again for this incredible opportunity!
