From the Care Bag Ministry Leaders:
Imagine being two years old, uprooted in the middle of the night and whisked away from a very bad home situation to the safety of foster parents.
The Care Bags ministry at First Church prepares care bags with various items depending on the age of the child – from infant to teens – for children entering the care of the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Often times, most times, this bag is all that the child will have upon going to the foster parents home. Can you imagine the comfort a teddy bear or warm blanket or a yummy snack may bring to these children?
Our group meets once a month during the Church school calendar year – usually the second Sunday of the month – in Room 28, immediately after the 10:00 a.m. service.
Who compiles our group you ask? We have kindergartners, elementary schoolers, tweens, teens, mothers, fathers, grandmas, grandpas who join us each meeting to fill the bags with diapers, bottle, formula, blanket, toy, book, onsies, pjs, outfits and the list goes on according to the age of the child.
Won’t you join us and see for yourself the love that goes into making these care bags. The commitment is short – with many hands we are usually done in an hour.
Before each meeting, we provide a “shopping list” of items needed. Items can be purchased (reimbursed for if you wish), or gently used. We have a Care Bags bin in Palmer Hall if you find yourself with some items to drop off but no time to make a meeting.
I can assure you – YOU will get so much more out of doing this ministry than you could ever imagine!!!
